Cottage Kitchens

When you think of Cottage Kitchens you conjure up an image of a simple lifestyle. A cottage will typically be a quaint place for relaxation without the hassle of precision or exactness.

Picture a home by a lake or a beach. One you can relax in without worries. One that doesn’t have a cohesive style like you see in more fanciful kitchens.

Cottage kitchens look to create a functional kitchen space that doesn’t rely on a lot of decoration. The key is having a room that looks like it was pieced together with what you had on hand.

Use pieces from eras that you truly enjoy. For example, if you have a home that has an original kitchen, you may really love the kitchen cabinets and want to keep them. With this style, you can do that. Cabinets that are older will fit perfectly with modern appliances or new flooring.

On the other hand, if perhaps you would like to replace your cabinets and love the look of white cabinets, replace them but leave a different aspect of the room intact. It really is about what you like and combining styles.

Many times you will find white cabinets with older flooring. Maybe there’shickory hardwood floors, an apron sink, and kitchen granite countertops.

If you like the look of distressed cabinets , you can use those too. Essentially, you use what you like.

The colors for this style are also based on what you like as well. If you want to create a bright and cheery kitchen, use bright colors. If you want something earthy, use earth tones like gray-blues, browns and olives. The key is to choose your palate properly and stay within that, meaning don’t place a bright red refrigerator next to an olive-green cabinet.

A great old look that has made its way back into homes today is the use ofsubway tile. This type of tile was first used in bathrooms, but the style has made its way into today’s kitchens. Especially so in a cottage kitchen design where anything goes. These tiles can be used as a backsplash design that’s interesting and a bit out of the norm.

Another great look that can be found in a cottage kitchen is bead board. Bead board, also referred to as wainscoting will create a more country, relaxed feel to the room and space. Bead board can be placed anywhere and everywhere you want.

One option is to use it on the bottom third of the walls and add a chair rail. Another idea, if you really like the look, is to bring it to just below the height of window and door trim. Again, your preference is what matters.

This type of kitchen is designed to be a relaxing place you sit in the morning reading your paper and having coffee. Be sure to include space for a small table, island seating or even a built-in bench in a kitchen nook.

Take time to decorate with family pictures or eclectic pieces of art and bring grandma’s old hutch out to showcase. Including things that represent your personal lifestyle in a nice touch. This truly is a kitchen style that is meant to reflect your personality.

Remember that this kitchen theme has really no restrictions. Anything that makes you think comfort and relaxation will be perfect!

Tuscan Kitchens

Tuscan Kitchens are among the most popular kitchen styles today. This kitchen theme has much of the same look as other old world kitchen styles, with some differences.

This lively style comes from the Italian countryside where warmth and color come to life. If you want a cheerful and inviting kitchen, then this is it!

There is nothing modern about Tuscan kitchens outside of your appliances. It is bright, open and airy and is best suited for family and friends to gather together. It’s a great place for entertainment and to enjoy a meal.

Some of the kitchen color schemes that are used to create the interior of Tuscan kitchens are light earth tones. Often a combination of olive greens, browns, deep reds, terracotta, and gold come together nicely.

When talking about combining colors, don’t limit yourself to just attractivekitchen colors on walls only. Look at your whole space. Compliment the color of the floor with the cabinets, countertops, walls and décor, extending them to adjoining rooms of your home.

Natural materials gives this kitchen its homey feel. The more wood and other natural products such as granite, marble, and limestone, the better. Look to create a dramatic appearance by using natural materials in unusual places such as stone at a raised breakfast bar or an arched stone surround at your cooktop. Use a copper kitchen sink to make a statement.

Hand scraped hardwood floors and distressed kitchen cabinets go great with this style. Consider a unique kitchen hood surround. By making a hood part of your kitchen design you create a focal point that anchors the kitchen down. You can use a detailed shelf with scrolled brackets underneath as shown in the photo on this page.

Other wood details are a key part of this sumptuous kitchen style. Adding a wine rack or built in shelving to your kitchen island plans will enhance the charm and beauty of your space. Decorative moldings can also be found highlighting various parts of the cabinetry. It’s the details that make your kitchen exceptional.

Another detail that stands out with this style is the kitchen backsplash tile designs. Whether you use tile backsplashes above all the counters, or in just one area, it will add character.

A very popular way to decorate with tile is to create a picture or mural. Often you will see pictures of this kitchen style that have a scenic mural displayed on the wall behind the cooktop. Most often, these mosaic murals depict an Italian country scene.

In creating the design for Tuscan kitchens, the details and décor will pull your entire room together.

Decorate using clay pots and bowls with fresh flowers or fruit.Outfit your tall kitchen cabinets with wrought iron hardware and tie them in with wrought iron light fixtures. When selecting lighting fixtures, the preference is wall sconces and chandeliers with lantern type shades. In larger kitchens consider pendant lights over the island made from wrought iron and stained glass.Use large windows to bring in as much light as possible.  Display your cast iron cookware on walls or on a rack above your island or cooking area.Display a terracotta pot with cooking utensils makes for convenience when cooking, and serves as a great accessory.  A copper kitchen sink is in keeping with this style as mentioned.

It will become a gathering place every day for your family as well as guests to stop by and relax over a cup of coffee or a glass of wine.  This lively style comes from the Italian countryside where warmth and color come to life. Another really nice feature is self-closing drawers. They will pull themselves closed when the drawer is within a close distance of the face of the cabinet. No more drawers left open!

We have covered some of your main choices as it relates to kitchen cabinets. You can also look at other simple things like cabinet light baffle that conceal your under cabinet lights. Kitchen cabinet crown molding that is used to finish the top of the cabinets. Kitchen hood design, valances, planted moldings, and other kitchen cabinet extras.

It’s not unusual to pull a design together only to realize that you have to scale it back to reduce your costs. But hopefully you can get what you want within your budget.

At this point you probably have an idea of the type of interior design you want. Will it be raised panel doors with crown mold at the top for a more classic look or will it be the flush doors on the frameless cabinets for a more modern look?

Rest assured, there is a cabinet out there that will suit your taste. If you want to know how to design a kitchen with timeless elegance…the kitchen cabinets will be a main factor in giving you the overall look you want.

French Country Kitchens Give You Simple Prestige And Warmth

French country kitchens bring an old world rustic look and feel to your modern-day home.

The focus of this style is to create a space that is warm and inviting for every day living and special entertaining.

This look is easy to achieve whether you are remodeling your current kitchen or building a new home.

One of the key aspects of this style is the color you use. Think earth tones. The most popular colors used are browns, deep reds, olive greens, cream and of course terracotta or burnt orange.

Keep in mind when choosing your cabinet finish, dark, rustic and worn will compliment your possible kitchen color schemes. You may even want to consider lighter woods that show the character of the species like knotty pine cabinets.

Using color and texture is very important. In addition to colors being earthy, French Country kitchens showcases natural outdoor materials inside the home. Think about having exposed posts and beams on the ceiling.

For the walls, old world homes were often made of plaster. But by using special paint colors, skip troweled or faux finishes, you can get the same look.

Another way to bring texture and nature into your kitchen design is by using brick or stone in the layout. A great option for this is to add stone or brick to a wall or a section of wall for that “old-world feel.” Expand on that by using hardwood or terracotta tiles on the floor. Think about using a distressed or scraped hardwood floor for added texture.

French Country kitchens will boast beautiful kitchen granite countertops, tile or wood counter tops. If you can’t decide, think about using a combination of the materials. For example, use granite on your main countertop, but add a hardwood top to your island or vice versa. If hardwood is not your first choice, try a different color in the same substance.

Accessorize

This elegant kitchen style often features shelving, alcoves and hanging pots as décor. When possible add a kitchen pot rack above your island. Hang shelves on the walls and create niches or alcoves within the walls.

Unique to this style is the hanging of copper pots. This can be done on a wrought iron rack above your island or stove top, or simply on the walls.

If you have an island prep sink, choose a copper bar sink to go along with this style. The combination of copper and wrought iron is also an eye-catcher. You may want to look at using a copper kitchen sink to compliment this kitchen style as well.

Consider using wrought iron hardware on your cabinets, or lantern style lighting fixtures to tie your kitchen together.

In French European kitchen design the kitchen was often a gathering place as it is today. For that reason, over-sized furniture pieces such as a table and seating was common.

Whether you are looking for a dramatic new kitchen design done by specialist, or you are doing the work yourself, you must start with great kitchen layout design. To achieve the warm, inviting atmosphere that French country kitchens offer, carefully choose your colors, textures and materials for the area.

Use any and all available space for shelving and storage, and enhance the look with key decorative pieces that speak to the time.

Your kitchen will be the focal point of your home and a place friends and family will enjoy gathering for hours.

Kitchen Cabinet Design:Choose What Suits You Best

Kitchen cabinet design provides you with a lot of options so that you can design a superb kitchen that is one of a kind.

Have you noticed that whenever you enter someone’s kitchen, the first thing that you notice are the kitchen cabinets? Or maybe you notice the cabinets and the kitchen counter tops as a whole.

The cabinets and the kitchen cabinet plans play an important role in the overall appeal of your kitchen.

There are so many kitchen cabinet styles to choose from and you can quickly narrow your choices down based simply on what you like.

You and/or your designer will bring your kitchen cabinet design together with the best choices to fit with your kitchen interior design.

One of your first choices is whether you want frameless kitchen cabinets or those that have a face frame. Frameless and face frame cabinets do have a different look to them.

The frameless cabinets have doors and drawers close together for a more sleek look while face frame cabinets show more of the stiles and rails that are behind the door and drawers.

Most people aren’t concerned about which they choose because they both look great. It’s a matter of what looks best to you and the style that you want.

The face frame cabinets are best suited for a classic look while the frameless go better with a modern style.

Not all cabinet makers produce frameless cabinets. If you want a frameless type for a contemporary kitchen design then the manufacturers are limited.

If the cabinet maker of the cabinets that you like only make a face frame cabinet, you may have an option to think about. Usually cabinet makers offer their cabinets in a “standard overly” as shown in the photo to the left.

They will often have a “full overly” as shown in the photo to the right for an increased price.

The full overly shows less of the stiles and rails behind doors and drawers and has larger doors and drawers as you can see.

This will give you a very similar appearance to the frameless cabinet if you like that look.

Unique DUNE kitchen range from Pedini

A little earlier this year, Italian luxury kitchen maker Pedini introduced a new line of kitchen cabinets that had an interesting characteristic – a system that doesn’t include handles. The DUNE series is defined by asymmetrically curved base units echoing flowing forms found in nature. Opening is achieved by a groove on the edge of the extra thick front panel (base units) or by a vertical aluminum profile (tall units). Is this innovative? What do you think?

White Kitchens

In the past we have done a series of kitchens featuring red, brown, black and white, orange yellow, blue and green color schemes. But rooms need not always have a splash of color to make them look appealing.

While technically not a color, white is the result of all colors appearing combined, representing wholeness and completion. It is the most neutral of neutrals and the easiest to decorate with as it crosses style lines and reflects light in a way that visually opens up a room like no other color. White is known to symbolize clarity, modernity and purity which typically evokes a rejuvenating feeling when it comes to interior design – the start of something new. While this is not a step by step guide on how to design a kitchen in white, you will definitely get some ideas here. The 21 white kitchens you are about to view are nothing short of a breath of fresh air, so take a deep breath and scroll on…
