Skyhouse by David Hotson Architect

“skyhouse is a residence in the sky, a residential penthouse situated at the summit of 1 of the earliest surviving skyscrapers in New York City.

The 4 story penthouse structure, which had never been utilised as a residence, was made in 1896 as an archetypal hip-roofed home type situated twenty-one stories above the street.  In the intervening decades this penthouse has been progressively surrounded by the astonishing vertical cityscape of Reduce Manhattan. From the private elevator vestibule, lit by a skylight which frames the apex of the adjacent skyscraper sixty stories above, the ramped entrance hall passes by means of the facetted shaft of the stairwell.

The original riveted steel structure –among the extremely earliest steel frames utilized in skyscraper construction in New York City- threads by means of the stairwell, slipping previous the seamless glass bridge to attain the glass floor of the attic 4 stories above the entrance level.

In the major living space the original steel frame was reconfigured to permit the space to ascend to the underside of the hipped penthouse roof 4 stories above.  The 50-foot-tall living space tapers upward past a mid-level balcony suspended in the steel framework, to an inclined glass wall which encloses 1 finish of the at the attic level –and gives a vertiginous view down to the primary level 4 stories below.

At the other finish of the attic, a circular hole cut into a similar outward sloping glass partition offers the entrance to the slide.  The mirror polished tubular stainless steel slide provides for a fast descent –sweeping more than a bedroom, out by way of a window, and over the stair, just before coiling down by way of the library ceiling to arrive at the flared rectangular exit opposite the penthouse entrance.

All of the spaces of this residence exploit its scenario above the Manhattan cityscape with vistas channeled through all 4 levels of the penthouse structure at a range of scale to capture framed views of iconic structures in the surrounding 3-dimensional cityscape. Whilst the accurate nature of these spaces can only be revealed to a visitor encountering them in the skilled present, the pictures re-presented right here offer a glimpse of the experience of this residence in the sky above the city of New York.”
